Work-Related Injuries
1
Check the Employee's Condition
- If it's an emergency, call 911 immediately.
- If medical care is needed, but not an emergency, manager should take the employee to an urgent care medical facility.
- Tell the healthcare provider the injury is work-related and provide the company and workers' comp carrier name.
2
Provide First Aid (if minor)
- If only first aid is needed and the employee does not want outside care, treat them on-site.
- The incident must still be documented.
3
Report the Injury
- Even if an injury appears minor, report it promptly, ideally within 24 hours. Delayed reporting can lead to increased claim cost, treatment delays, and potential compliance issues.
- Timely reporting helps ensure proper care and can reduce claim costs.
- Secure accident scene (Take photos of work area, preserve equipment or materials involved, identify and interview witnesses, collect video footage if available)
4
Complete a First Report of Injury Form
- This can be submitted online or by phone.
- The form includes details about the employee, employer, provider, and the incident.
- Check with your state's workers' compensation bureau for the correct form.
5
Provide Detailed Information
Include:
- Date and time of injury
- Employee name and job title
- Where and how the injury happened.
- Body parts injured.
- Medical facility visited.
6
Claim Review and Outcome
- The insurance carrier will decide whether to approve or deny the claim.
- If approved, payments may cover medical bills and lost wages.
- If denied, the employee can appeal the decision.
7
Return to Work
- Once recovered, the employee should return to work—either full-time or on light duty—unless the injury causes total disability.
- When medically appropriate, if able, offer transitional or modified-duty assignments that comply with the treating provider's restrictions
